Harcourt Butler Technical University is commonly known as HBTU, it is located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is deemed University and one of the best University in India. It was started in the year 1921 and it formerly known as Harcourt Butler Technical Institute. In 2021 it got the status of deemed university and renamed as Harcourt Butler Technical University.
The college has two campus i.e. East Campus and West Campus. The East campus of University is spread over an area of 77 acres of green lush land and the west campus is spread over an area of 271 acres of land. It has world class infrastructure and having all the facilities for the students and college staff.
There are various administrative offices, academic blocks, well stocked central library with rich collection of book of all subjects, journals, periodicals etc, well equipped auditorium, Computer centre, labs, workshop, cafeteria, 4 girls hostel, 2 boys hostel, gym, medical centre, guest house, banking facility and many others.
It imparts the technical education in the area of Engineering and Computer Application. The offered courses are B.Tech in Chemical engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Food Technology, Leather technology, Mechanical engineering, Information technology, Plastics Technology, Electronics Engineering, Biochemical Engineering etc, M.Tech in Oil Technology, Environmental Science, Food Technology, Chemical Engineering, CAD/ CAM, Biochemical Engineering etc, MCA, PH.D etc.
There is student of council which is responsible for organizing Curricular and extra co-curricular activities throughout the year such as Tech fest, seminars, workshop, cultural programs, sports, workshops etc.

It offers B.Tech course is 13 specializations. The minimum eligibility for B.Tech course is 10+2 in science stream with PCM subjects from recognized board. They must have valid score in JEE Mains or UPSEE. Students will be called for counseling based on the score obtained in JEE Mains or UPSEE.
For M.tech, must have done b.tech or BE in engineering discipline from recognized University and obtained minimum 50% marks in qualifying examination. Admission will be done through written test and merit base. First preference will be given to those students who have valid score in GATE.
PH.D, must have done Master degree in relevant discipline with minimum 55% aggregate marks from recognized University. They will have to appear in entrance examination and personal interview conducted by University.

The fee of college is not too much high it is feasible being a Government Institute. The fee for B.tech course is Rs.91,600 per annum, M.Tech is Rs. 73,700 p.a, MCA Rs.64,333 p.a and Ph.D Rs.55,500 p.a.

- Firstly, The Centre of Excellence (CoE) on “Applied Research, Training & Education in Lipid Science” has been established in the Department of Oil Technology at HBTU Kanpur under the sponsorship by World Bank. Under this Centre of Excellence Lectures, Workshop, Seminars from industry people are organized on frequent basis.
- Next, The Central Workshop which provides training to UG students and assist the UG, PG & Research Students in their projects and experiments. Also it provides help to the maintenance section of the university in its daily working.
- The Facility of Computer Centre which caters to the computing needs of the Faculty, Staff and Students for their Research and Teaching.
- The Central Library Facility that University has consists of Tagore Central Library, Professor Incharge Library, Officiating Librarian, E-Resources, Print Journals, and s Services.
